Everything You Need to Know About IP67 Forklift Lights

Forklift lights are used in order to help drivers and operators see what is in front of them, but you can also buy additional lights to help other workers steer clear of the forklift when it is cruising on through a narrow aisle way or space. All businesses with forklifts are required to own a set of light for each vehicle they use.

If you are in need of a new set of forklift warning lights, you’ll see that some of them come with additional benefits or features. One of these features is that they are IP67 waterproof. If you are curious about waterproof lights, what IP67 means, and want to know some instances where it would be great to have waterproof lights, we can explain all of this to you here.

Why Are Some Forklift Lights Waterproof?

It might sound random to think that forklift lights of all things are waterproof, but as with other electronics and devices, more and more products are becoming waterproof and can be submerged in water for a period of time before the product fails. Today’s forklift lights have reinforced housing so that it takes longer for less water to get inside. Even if the forklift light remains on when submerged underwater, the light will continue to shine for a while before enough water gets inside the housing.

It’s important to know that waterproof doesn’t exactly mean free of water. Some products marked waterproof will be less tolerable to water than others. Professional products will tend to have a “grade” of waterproofing where you can easily find out what water pressure can a product tolerate and for how long.

    What Does IP67 Mean?

IP67 is a code that is issued by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). This code and others are given to products that undergo dust and waterproof testing.

“IP” stands for international protection, and doesn’t have any other variables.

The first digit, that being 6, refers to the protection of dust and other solid particles. That means the forklift lights can manage to keep dust out of its housing. 6 is the highest grade.

The second digit refers to protection against water and other liquids, in which case many forklift lights will tend to score a 7. Products that score a 7 can be submerged into a body of water up to one yard deep, and can stay operational for half an hour. They can also endure forceful water jets.

A forklift warning light rated IP67 can tolerate a lot of water before failing due to the effects of submersion, meaning it will hold up pretty well in light of most water-related incidents.

When Would I Need Forklift Lights That Are Waterproof?

You may not think of many instances where your forklift lights will have a chance of failing because of water, but depending on your location and weather conditions, forklift lights may be likely to be prone to water than you think.

If your warehouse has large, open water or liquid tanks, you’ll never know if there will ever be a possibility in which a forklift will drive by one of these tanks and a light will fall right in one. If your forklift also operates outdoors, rain can also be a problem over time, despite the fact that you might not think that much water comes down onto your forklift lights. Also, in case of a flood, you might be able to salvage your forklift lights so that’s one less expense afterwards.
